Vince Chinaski (Denmark) – Going into Town (single)

We’ve had quite a few songs over the last year or so about quitting one’s homestead for greener pastures. “This town don’t smell too pretty” as Oasis famously said.

But Vince Chinaski is made of sterner stuff. You get the impression that if terrorists or a drug gang invaded his neighbourhood Vince would be the first to run towards them in order to confront them, rather than the other way, having found the hero inside himself to paraphrase M People’s Heather Small in ‘Search for the hero’.

Sorry, I’ve got this lyrical comparison thing going on right now and can’t shake it off! In my defence, both Vince and M People have nailed personal empowerment, inner strength, self-belief, resilience, belonging, and hope. He isn’t getting the first train out, he’s dressed up in his glad rags and he’s ‘Going into Town’, having replaced doubt with conviction.

“Tonight I’m feeling like the world is with me” quips Vince. I often get that feeling when I’m filling in my lottery ticket but my world is never with me. But in Vince’s case the stars are lining up and he doesn’t even have to try. What’s the secret, Vince? If you can bottle it you’ll soon be a millionaire.

It’s a soft rock feel good song par excellence complete with bibbity bobbity jangly electro pop inserts and I doubt Vince will have to wait long before it’s synced into a feel good movie or TV advert.

Just one small comment I should make. I didn’t recognise Vinci’s voice this time (we’ve featured him several times before). It’s less commanding than I’ve heard previously and arguably doesn’t match the message of the song.

Moreover it sounds like he’s trying to imitate Bob Dylan, who always was a mutterer. So without a physical copy of the lyrics (this song isn’t on Bandcamp either) and with my lousy hearing I struggled to hear some of them this time. And that’s a shame because Vince is a clever wordsmith, not just a tune maker.
