Zoé-Loes was here not so long ago but despite the waves of new artists awaiting their inclusion in NMC I had to feature this song tonight.
‘Sanctuary’ tells a story that reminds me of the one that is the subject of Nightwish’s song ‘Eva’, one of my favourites by that band and which chronicles the life of an innocent, deeply misunderstood young girl seeking to escape a harsh, unwelcoming world.
In Zoé-Loes’ case her lyrics tell the story of a girl finding her sanctuary (from what we do not know) not by escaping her surroundings but in her own mind.
She builds a great deal of emotion into ‘Sanctuary’ while never losing sight of the fact that it is a pop song and that the listeners are there to be entertained, not made to feel miserable. And she has a rich timbre to her voice allied to good diction which leaves you unsurprised to discover that she was a contestant on The Voice of Germany (she is resident now in Norway).
I’m reminded that one of the best Eurovision songs of recent years that didn’t make the Top 5, S10’s ‘De Diepte’ had a similar feel to it and dealt also with finding sanctuary, in her case from her own demons.
I am suggesting that Zoé-Loes could write a Eurovision song? She already has.
And as in the case of ‘Eva’, the lyrics are left open to personal interpretation. In particular they will no doubt help those that have had cause to seek out their own personal sanctuary for whatever reason.
I reckon Anette Olzon would enjoy singing this song!
It was co-written by Sonia Maselik, Stefi Martine Ringen and Izumi Takagi, with Kevin Lehr as the producer.
